Aya el Batrawy Interview – Update from Tahrir Square, Egypt, one year anniversary #Jan25

Middle Eastern correspondent Aya el Batrawy (@ayaelb), who correctly predicted a year back that El Baredei would not become Egypt’s new leader, called in to give an update on Tharir Square.  This to celebrate the one year anniversary of the #Jan25 uprising. So often we lose sight of the long struggle that continues after the bright lights and Anderson Cooper has left the scene for more theatrical pictures.

Buddy Roemer tells “Shock and Awesome” that both parties are corrupt, totally bought and connected at the pocket book.

TJ and The Tux got their second chance to speak with Governor Roemer this week and he was fired up. To date Roemer has been shut out of 21 Republican debates and because of that he is starting a unity ticket by picking a Democrat for his Vice Presiden- tial running mate. Erskine Bowles of the Simpson-Bowles debt reduction plan is on the short list. Instead of being about a party, Roemer’s 8 years as President would be about America. In Roemer’s words, “Obama is owned by wall street. Mitt Romney is the 1% and Newt Gingrich is a lobbyist for the 1%. Meanwhile big business controls all of the reforms in Washington, banks are still too big to fail and corruption is all encom- passing”. Each party is blaming each other and Roemer is the only candidate that is “free to lead”.

Shock and Awesome Interview 12/23/11 – Sue Terry on North Korea

Sue Terry is a Senior Research Scholar at Columbia University. She has spent time at the CIA and NSC (National Security Council) and CFR (Council on Foreign Relations) working on policy and political developments in Northeast Asia and North Korea. To put it plainly, she knows enough about the situation on the Korean peninsula that US Presidents seek her advice.

We were lucky enough to track Sue down a few days ago and ask her pressing questions about the passing of Kim-Jong-Il. Mainly we wanted to settle a bar bet.  Could Kim-Jong-Il be considered the greenest dictator on the planet? The Tux claims that he could. It is well documented by the reliable German news source Der Sphincter that the man did not defecate. That means that he never personally put any greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Also, Kim-Jong-Il had a fear of flying so he took an armored train everywhere. Again, saving fossil fuels! KJI always wanted to be a movie star but it seems he simply missed his opportunity. Instead of kidnapping US journos Laura Ling and Euna Lee for attention he should have called Albert Arnold Gore Jr. and starred in “An inconvenient truth” as the future of human evolution.  Imagine a world without flatulence and irritable bowel syndrome.  A world where people are no longer tied to their toilets and you never again have to hold your breath while peeing after being exposed to the most toxic haze of unfriendly gas in a bar bathroom.  Forget that North Korea under KJI regularly tormented South Korea and the rest of Asia with its bottle rocket nuclear program.  Forget that the man flew in fresh lobsters and caviar to meet his train regularly while his people ate coal for three meals a day.  We just lost a man who reached singularity of the colon.  Ray Kurzweil, eat your heart out!

Interview – Dr. Emmanuel Navon

TJ and The Tux - Dr. Emmanuel Navon Interview

Shock and Awesome – Dr. Emmanuel Navon Interview

We spoke to Dr. Emmanuel Navon this week about the Palestinian push for statehood at the UN in NYC.  While Dr. Navon was staunchly against the attempt he did reiterate that the Israeli delegation has been willing to sit with the Palestinians to further peace talks.  I think his most important comment came from a question I asked him about the interdependency of the economies of Israel and the West Bank where he said, “On the ground there is no real separation between Israel and the West Bank… On the ground people live with each other, work with each other and go to each others weddings.”  As in most political conflicts, the people on the ground who are most affected are far ahead of their respective governments when it comes to peace.

About Dr. Emmanuel Navon:

Dr. Emmanuel Navon is a consultant, and an academic and lecturer at Tel-Aviv university specializing in international relations.

He is the founder of The Navon-Levy Group (founded in 2007) – a consulting firm that opens market opportunities for Israeli companies in Africa to the mutual benefit of Africa’s economic development and of Israel’s international outreach.

He is also a contributor to David Frum’s political op-ed site FrumForum - where he offers insight on Israeli politics and foreign relations.

From his last article on FrumForum:

“The true reason why Abbas has opted for unilateralism is that he has come to realize that Israel will not sign a peace agreement that includes the so-called Palestinian “right of return.” Abbas also knows that Western governments stand with Israel on that issue, because the Palestinian definition of the so-called “right of return” would turn Israel into a bi-national state with an Arab majority, while the Palestinian state will not tolerate a single Jew (Abbas explicitly said so recently). The “two-state solution” and the “right of return” are mutually exclusive. Unilateralism will enable the Palestinians to obtain statehood (even virtually and illegally) without having to pay the price demanded by Israel and the West, i.e. making peace with Israel and abandoning the so-called “right of return.”  Unilateralism, then, will perpetuate the conflict and will legitimize the idea that accepting and recognizing Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people is no longer a condition and a requirement for the establishment of a Palestinian state. UN members who will vote in favor of the Palestinian move at the General Assembly will in effect be accomplice to the perpetuation of the conflict and to the de facto denial of the Jewish people’s right to self-determination.”
